Boston Red Sox
Founded in 1893, the Red Sox became an American League
franchise in 1900. After having been placed in the Eastern Division of the
American League, the Red Sox became the defending World Series Champions.
Identified as the Boston Somersets in their formative years they became
the Boston Pilgrims after having been procured by Henry J. Kililea. The
team won their first pennant in 1903 and also the World Series title. The
following season they were even more emphatic and won another pennant, but
the Giants manager, John McGraw due to his hostility with AL founder, Ban
Johnson refused to play the post-season playoff against them. In 1905, the
team became Boston Puritans. The team eventually became the Red Sox when
John I. Taylor took the hold of the team. “The Boston Baseball Club” wears
red colored sox. Their name is synonymous with the old-fashioned form of
socks. With the players like Babe Ruth the Red Sox became the most
flourishing team in the first quarter of the 20th century. From 1903
through 1918 Babe Ruth, Cy Young and Tris Speaker helped the club to win
six AL flags and five Fall Classic titles. Babe Ruth was a bonus for the
team. He led the league in wins, shutouts, complete games, and earned run
average (ERA). In 1919 he became the Yankees possession. Yankees gain was
the Red Sox loss and also the start of the greatest rivalry between the
two professional clubs. His deal was a straight sale. The time he was
traded it wasn’t assumed by anybody that he’d rule the sport with his
power hitting skills. The trade is also recognized as the “Curse of the
Bambino” since the Red Sox failed to win the Fall Classic title after the
exile of their star player The team’s owner Harry Frazee also traded other
star players like Ban Johnson, Sad Sam Jones and Waite Hoyt. Outfielder
Ted Williams due to his meticulous playing skills became one of the finest
hitters in the history of baseball and the last major league contender to
accumulate a batting average of .400 or greater in a single season. He
along with Rogers Hornsby of the Cadinals is the only player to win the
Triple Crown twice. He also lead the league in hitting, home runs, and
runs batted in (RBIs) in the same season. Cy Young notched various
major-league career records including the most wins, most innings pitched,
and most complete games. In his honor, the confederacy of major league
established the Cy Young Memorial Award, presented every year to each
league’s best pitcher. Carl Yastrzemski debuted in 1961 and became known
for his hitting skills. In 1967 he the team to the World Series and won
the American League Triple Crown and put on one of the greatest displays
of hitting. But the club didn’t win the Fall Classic title. The Red Sox
became the last team of major league in 1971 to surpass the heritage of
cultural exclusion after drafting infielder Pumpsie Green. In 1975, the
Sox won the American League championship featuring Yaz, rookie outfielders
Jim Rice and Fred Lynn, veteran outfielder Dwight Evans, catcher Carlton
Fisk, and pitchers Luis Tiant and the eccentric junkballer Bill Lee. The
same season they played in the most thrilling World Series. Catcher
Carlton Fisk in the 12th inning of game 6 hit a home run and rolled on to
a series-tying victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Fred Lynn became the
first player to be named rookie of the year and most valuable player
(MVP). In 1999 they competed against the perennial champions, the New York
Yankees but delivered not so good scores. The club is currently run by
John Henry and Tom Werner, who paid $660 million for its ownership. Fenway
Park and 82 percent of New England Sports Network is also a part of this
deal. The team’s logo is hanging red colored socks imposed over a white
baseball with words Boston and Red Sox printed over it. Their home
ballpark is Fenway Park and the players wear uniform of white, red, and
blue.
